In many ways, it feels like the future is already here. With smart technology in households across the nation and smartphones in our pockets, we’re already benefiting from some futuristic comforts – but what else could be possible? That’s the question we’re asking with today’s post.
Just what will the bathroom of the future look like? Robot toothbrushes? Flying bathtubs? Let’s find out.
Smart mirrors (which talk back)
Have you ever wished for your very own Magic Mirror? It might not be able to show you the future, but, with recent advancements in technology, the concept of a truly smart mirror may not be too far away. Just like the voice assistants we already have in our homes, such as Amazon Echo and Google Home, mirrors of the future are likely to have smart-tech built right in with voice control. This means you can ask your mirror to give you a little more light, while also checking on the weather for the day to pick out the appropriate outfit. Mirror, mirror, on the wall… who’s the smartest of them all?
Your bath and shower will be personalised
As you’ll already know, there’s plenty of smart technology already available when it comes to showers and whirlpool baths. After all, you can find technology here at which will transform your bathtub into an underwater-light loudspeaker. But the biggest change in the future will likely be how we interact with the bath or shower when we begin bathing. Just imagine being able to pre-fill your bathtub from your smartphone, or having the tub recognise you when you enter the bathroom and setting the shower to your personal favourite temperature. This level of personalisation and recognition is likely to be seen throughout the home in the future.
Hands-free toilets
If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that using the toilet is always better when it’s more “hands-off”. After all, it’s a very common way to spread germs far and wide. It’s less of an issue at home, but public toilets could certainly do with some improvement when it comes to the level of hands-on interaction which is required for use. Thankfully, some smart bathroom tech companies are already thinking about solving this problem, starting with the concept of hands-free flushing. Simply use the toilet, wave your hand over the cistern, and boom! The toilet flushes and cleans itself, leaving you free to wash your hands in the most hygienic way possible.
Fully integrated smart assistants
It’s already possible to bring smart assistants into the bathroom. In fact, we’ve written an entire guide on that very subject, but there are still some limitations as of 2019. The biggest of these is that smart assistants like Amazon Echo and Google Home still don’t offer full waterproofing, meaning you have to be quite careful when using them in the bathroom. In the future, however, you can expect smart assistants to be totally unshackled – with no need for an individual unit. It’s only a matter of time until smart assistants are integrated into the very walls of the bathroom (or any room of the house), with strategically placed microphones so you can give commands from anywhere – even the depths of an indulgently bubbly whirlpool bath!
