Outside on the Inside: Which Plants Are Best Suited to the Bathroom?

Description

The bathroom is a warm and welcoming place to most people, but the same can’t necessarily be said for plant life. In fact, if you’ve ever tried to spruce up your bathroom with a vase of flowers, you might just have found that they didn’t take to the humid conditions too well. This is certainly not unusual, but it is something you can avoid if you take a few minutes to learn which plants thrive in the bathroom. And wouldn’t you just know it? We’ve put together a list of the very best plants for your bathroom.

So, let’s get your own personal rain forest started.

The basics of bathroom survival for plants

Before we get into the specific plants you could successfully place in your bathroom, let’s take a moment to look at the factors a plant will need to withstand. Bathrooms are primarily places with wildly fluctuating humidity. On any given day, the air could remain fairly dry with nobody taking a shower or bath; but the next might see several baths and showers in a row. These changeable conditions mean that any bathroom plant will need to be able to handle rapid changes to both temperature and humidity. Another factor to consider is the amount of sunlight a plant will receive. Generally speaking, bathrooms tend to have privacy glass of some sort, which can reduce the amount of sunlight available to any potential plant life. Now we’ve got the basics covered, let’s see which plants will thrive in these conditions.

Spider plants

Don’t worry – they’re not as scary as they sound. In fact, spider plants are some of the best houseplants you can place in your bathroom, because they actively “dislike” direct sunlight. Spider plants, as the name suggests, have lots of thin leaves which can easily become scorched with even a little too much sunlight. They’re also very adaptable to temperature, meaning spider plants are a great choice for the bathroom.

 Aloe vera

As one of the most popular houseplants in the UK, there’s a good chance that you have an aloe vera plant around the house already. If so, don’t be afraid to move it to the bathroom. Aloe vera is one of the hardiest plants on the planet, and can thrive without much direct sunlight or frequent watering. In fact, because it stores water in its leaves, the humidity present in your bathroom may be all it needs to live a long life (but don’t quote us on that).

 Peace lily

The name alone sounds appealing, doesn’t it? We could all do with a little more peace in our lives, so the peace lily is an ideal addition to your bathroom. A beautiful and delicate white flower, the peace lily thrives in humid environments, so if your household are fans of regular baths and showers, it’ll be right at home. It’s not too fussed about direct sunlight, but if you want to see its true beauty in bloom, it’s a good idea to place it on a windowsill.

 Bamboo

This one’s ideal, especially for those with a pet panda. Bamboo is a hardy plant which originated in southeast Asia; they’re so hardy, in fact, that bamboo is able to survive in temperatures as low as -23 Celsius. We know Britain has its fair share of cold snaps, but we can be fairly sure the bamboo will be very comfy in a Briutish bathroom. Just remember that bamboo has a tendency to grow and grow (and grow) – so repotting may be required!

You should now be well-equipped to bring a little greenery into your bathroom without any worries. But if you have any questions about whirlpool baths, showers, or any other bathroom enhancements, be sure to call us.
